Muddies Over 40’s played their rescheduled Round 1 fixture over the weekend, securing a fantastic win against Gold Crest!
Over 40’s Captain Report.
Our rescheduled round 1 game saw us at the lovely inner northern suburbs home ground of Gold Crest at Finsbury Park. The day started well, winning the toss and deciding to bat on what looked like a pretty flat, dry wicket.
Chris Fitzgerald and John Barrett got us going with a 90+ run opening partnership at 5 RPO. John was out for 38 chasing a wide delivery and Chris retired n.o. shortly after on 50. From there the run rate continued, everyone got a bat and we finished on 9/205. Dave Andrews batted with intent for 30 runs.
I reckon 170/180 was par on that ground, so I was very happy with 205.
Due to a sudden illness we started our defence with 10 players. Tight bowling and pressure in the field was key and we did well to have them at 2/40 after 14 at the first drinks break. Bhavan Mody bowled really well, bowling 7 straight for 1/29. Sean Blake bowled good areas, unlucky not get a wicket, 0/13 off 6 overs. Not bad for his first game in 15 years. The scoreboard was our friend by the second drinks break when we had them 5/100 odd after 28 overs. Which was lucky because we were down to 9 on the field. John Barrett and Ken Finlay took 2 wickets a piece. Merrick Robertson and Dave Andrews 1 a piece.
With Gold Crest needing 10 an over with 5 left I thought I was running out of bowling options. Enter one Jason Murphy and easy as you like takes 3 for 4 off 7 deliveries. Game won by 50 runs
